Popcorn shoulder bag pattern

My popcorn bag, a.k.a. my “mystery project” a couple of weeks ago, resulted after I started working with samples of yarn.

I wanted a small shoulder bag made with the popcorn stitch.  I chose garter stitch for the bottom and strap.  The strap forms the sides of the bag, so the overall shape is more of a box than an envelope.

I had three colors of “doubles.”  I had about 1-3/4 ounce of each peach and light brown, and 3 ounces of yellow.  I’m not sure the yardage, since I didn’t measure it.  My best estimate is about 20 yards each for the peach and light brown, and 36 yards for the yellow.

I used size 7 needles, and my gauge is: 7 stitches and 13 rows equal 2 inches.

I suggest you try a swatch.  Yarns can vary, and if you like the pattern in the size needles you’re using, the gauge in this case doesn’t matter.

Popcorn shoulder bag

Approximate size: 8-1/4 inches wide x 7-1/4 inches high x 1-1/2 inches deep

PKP = Purl 1, Knit 1, Purl 1 in same stitch (increase from 1 stitch to 3).

K 3 tog = Knit 3 stitches together (decrease from 3 stitches to 1)

Row 1: Knit all stitches (wrong side).

Row 2: Knit 1 *PKP, K 3 tog, repeat from * to next to last stitch, knit 1.

Row 3: Knit all stitches.

Row 4: Knit 1, *K 3 tog, PKP, repeat from * to next to last stitch, knit 1.

Repeat these 4 rows for pattern.

Gauge on size 7 needles:  7 stitches and 6 rows equal 2 inches

Bag:

Cast on 30 stitches.

Starting with peach, knit 24 rows in pattern (6 repeats of Rows 1 – 4).

Change to light brown yarn, and knit 24 rows in pattern (6 repeats of Rows 1 – 4).

Knit 6 Rows in Garter Stitch.

Knit 4 rows of pattern ( 1 repeat of Rows 1 – 4)..

Switch to peach, and knit 12 rows in pattern (3 repeats of Rows 1 -4).

Switch to yellow, knit 8 rows in pattern (2 repeats of Rows 1 – 4).

Bind off.

Handle:

With yellow cast on 185 stitches (or desired number for handle length).

Knit 6 Rows in Garter Stitch.

Bind off.

Sew handle to sides of bag, being careful not to twist handle.   Garter stitch on bag (bottom) should line up with short sides of handle.
